| The Naval Research Laboratory and Composite Mirror Applications, Inc. are working together to develop ultra-light weight Carbon-Fiber-Reinforced- Polymer (CFRP) telescopes. While CFRP material has been used and is currently used in light-weight telescope structures this is the first time that optics components are successfully manufactured. In this figure a 1 meter light weight mirror is shown. The mirror is thin so it can be deformed if needed. The weight of this mirror is 5.5 pounds with a spherical figure.
